ABOUT THE SPACE PROGRAM

THE SPACE PROGRAM IS A LOCATION-SPECIFIC PROJECT THAT ENDEAVORS TO REVITALIZE ORDINARY SPACES BY PROVIDING A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE THAT IS PART MUSEUM, STORE AND INSTALLATION. RE-INTERPRETING AND RE-CAPTURING THE CHARM OF ORDINARY SPACES WITHIN A CITY, THE SPACE PROGRAM SEEKS TO REDEFINE AND RE-ENGAGE VISITORS WHERE THEY CAN LEARN ABOUT LOCAL CULTURE IN AN UNCONVENTIONAL CONTEXT. INTENDED AS PART MUSEUM, PART RETAIL STORE AND PART INSTALLATION, IT FEATURES A CURATED MIX OF OBJECTS WHERE DESIGN, INTELLECT AND CONTEMPORARY CULTURE MEET.

GLOBALLY EXPANDABLE AS A CONCEPT, THE GOAL IS TO EMBED THE SPACE PROGRAM WITHIN DIFFERENT CITIES AROUND THE WORLD, SUCH THAT EACH NEW INSERTION INTRODUCES A RENEWED APPRECIATION OF THE SPACE.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

FOR EACH INSERTION, A SPONSOR WILL PROVIDE THE VENUE AND FINANCES REQUIRED, WHILE WE FURNISH THE CONCEPT, DESIGN, BUILD, AND CURATORIAL SERVICES FOR THE SPACE.  OUR FIRST INSERTION WILL BE AT THE LOBBY OF NEW MAJESTIC HOTEL, A DESIGN HOTEL LOCATED WITHIN THE CONSERVATION AREA OF OLD CHINATOWN.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

THE SPACE IS CONSTRUCTED USING MORE THAN 200 TIMBER WASHBOARDS. REMINISCENT OF THE LIVES OF THE EARLY SINGAPORE IMMIGRANTS, THE WASHBOARD IS A REPRESENTATION OF THE HUMILITY, GRIT AND HARD WORK OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF SINGAPORE. CHOSEN AS THE PRIMARY BUILDING MATERIAL, THE USE OF THE DOMESTIC WASHBOARD PAYS HOMAGE TO THE HISTORY OF OLD SINGAPORE WHILST RE-EXPRESSING ITS SPIRIT IN A CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT. A CERTAIN DEGREE OF VISUAL AND PHYSICAL POROSITY THROUGHOUT THE LOBBY IS RETAINED, CREATING AN INSERTION THAT WOULD ANIMATE THE SPACE PHYSICALLY AND PROGRAMMATICALLY, BUT SEPARATE FROM THE EXISTING LOBBY; A SPACE THAT BOTH GUESTS AND CASUAL VISITORS CAN ENJOY, A FOCAL POINT IN THE HOTEL THAT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER.
